Description

The Church of San Pellegrino stands on the town’s main square, in the hamlet of San Pellegrino.

It bears the signs of the renovations done on it from the 16th to the 19th century. The radical renovation in the 1700s made it a church with a nave and 2 aisles, supported by walled pilasters and with a wooden ceiling. The stoup is from 1567, the baptismal font and little wooden temple is possibly from 1588, and the organ from 1831.

A rare hollowed capital with four human faces at the corners (13th cent.) is on an octagonal column. There are two fine elegant wooden altars, possibly taken from deconsecrated or ruined churches in Norcia. The canvas shows the Trinity and the Holy Virgin at the top and in the center Saints Anthony of Padua and Francis, who symbolically redeem the souls in Purgatory by means of their cords (17th cent.). The second, on the opposite wall and belonging to the Fusconi family of Norcia, has a canvas of the Madonna of the Rosary and the 15 mysteries.

On the high altar, inside a gilded wooden case, is a 17th-century canvas of the Annunciation. In the past, every three years the altar at the head of the right aisle held the miraculous wooden Madonna of Montesanto. Today it has a 17th-century wooden statue of San Pellegrino, inside a case remade following a fire in 1833. Two twin canvases with Saints Andrew, Aloysius Gonzaga, Emidio on one and Saints, Charles Borromeo, and the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on the other, are attributed to the painter P.A. Mattei of Castel San Giovanni (Cascia).
